Vegan Alternatives for Meat and Dairy

With growing health concerns related to the consumption of meat and dairy, there is a rapid shift towards veganism and vegetarianism. But caring for your health doesn’t mean giving up all pleasurable foods, and going vegan doesn’t mean always consuming sad, tasteless, or unappetizing foods. With its growing popularity, people have discovered amazing alternatives for meat and dairy that taste phenomenal, while providing optimal nutrition and protecting your health.

To keep yourself dedicated to this lifestyle change, it’s important to maintain a happy and content relationship with the food you eat, and this can be done by experimenting and figuring out what suits your palate. Going vegan doesn’t mean you cut out every food item that involves or includes animal-sourced ingredients, you just find their vegan alternatives. Here are a few food items that you can find alternatives for.

Vegan butter alternatives

- For butter suitable for bread, buns and biscuits, you can opt for butter made with groundnut, almond and oil bases. These butters are rich in taste and nutrition, but not the most suitable for cooking and baking.

- Vegetable oils are appropriate for cooking and baking and provide a healthier alternative to processed butter. Oils like sunflower, canola, olive, and coconut are excellent for cooking, cheap, and readily available in all grocery stores.

- Olive oil and virgin coconut oil can also be used for baking instead of butter. Using other milk alternatives, there are many vegan desserts available online and in stores.

Vegan cheese alternatives

- Tofu is a very popular food item in East and South-East Asia and is sourced from soya. It holds a lot of water and is low in calories. Tofu is one of the most protein-rich food items and is also regularly consumed by non-vegans. It’s also a good alternative for cottage cheese.

Vegan meat alternatives

- Tofu is a very popular meat alternative in cooking due to its versatility. It can be baked, fried, grilled or sauteed with vegetables, and offers a hearty and healthy meal.

- If you’re looking for the specific taste and texture and meat, there are many alternatives to opt for. You can find these vegan meat items online and in grocery stores. Although these are a good option if you’re just transitioning to veganism, you shouldn’t make them a staple food in your diet as these artificial meats are generally too processed for an average healthy diet.

- For a similar texture to meat, you can also check out mushrooms, soya meat and jackfruits. You can add more lentils to your diet to increase your protein intake.

Vegan egg alternatives

- Two most commonly used vegan alternatives, especially for baking, are flax seeds and chia seeds. Mix a teaspoon or two of flax or chia seeds with an equal quantity of water and keep the mixture aside for a while. In a while, this concoction will form an egg-like consistency and gooeyness.

Similarly, mayonnaise can be made vegan by combining oil with soy milk. You can buy vegan mayonnaise online or from a grocery store.
